Grand Vin de Stellenbosch Shiraz 2019

TASTING NOTES

This opulent Shiraz with a deep plum red colour has notes of black berry aromas which is complemented with spice nuances and dark plum flavours on the palate. Lingering finish of spice, cloves, and nutmeg. With its structured yet refined tannins, the wine is very accessible now, but will also benefit from maturation for 2 to 4 years.

VINEYARDS

Beautiful site in the central of Stellenbosch. The block is situated on a slope, with North facing vineyards, and an East-West row direction. The three batches are selected from the top of the block at an elevation of 210m with decomposed granite soils, and the bottom of the block with an elevation of 130m, with a higher clay content and more vigour in the canopy.

WINEMAKING

Three batches were picked from the first to the third week of March respectively. They were kept separate throughout vinification. Different picking dates ensure that multiple optimum ripe levels were reached, ensuring that a broad spectrum of Shiraz aromas are captured. Automated and manual pump overs and punch downs creates optimum colour and tannin extraction. For a luscious texture 80% whole berry fermentation was done on one of the batches. One batch matured in a Foudre, the other in a combination of 300L and 500L French Oak barrels and the third batch in 600L French Oak barrels, for maximum of 16 months.
